My name is Angela Moulton. I am running for the Utah House of Representatives in District 58.

Education

As an educator, I am immersed in the daily struggles of public education. Thomas Jefferson said, “I think by far the most important bill in our whole code is that for the diffusion of knowledge among the people. No other sure foundation can be devised for the preservation of freedom, and happiness.” I believe as Thomas Jefferson did, that public education is vital to ensuring our freedom and happiness. I also believe public education is the key to a strong economy.

Population Growth and Affordable Housing

David and I own a few rentals in Utah County. We have seen first hand the cost of housing skyrocket since we bought our first home in 1998. We struggle with keeping our rents low while the cost of maintaining properties increases. We see our renters struggle to pay rent and provide the basic needs for their families. Utah needs a long-term plan in order to accommodate our growing population. The word is out that Utah is one of the best places to live and raise a family. How do we expand in a way that preserves existing neighborhoods yet provides quality housing for young families?

An Aging Population

The life expectancy in Utah is close to 80 years old. According to the US Census Bureau, there are 309,025 Utahns 65 and older. My sister is currently caring for our 75 year old father. She spends hours every week looking for resources to help my father afford an assisted living facility. The main problem she is running into is that depending on who you talk to, depends on the answer you will get. The resources he qualifies for change from person to person. Utah needs to outline clear and consistent resources that are available to help families who are caring for loved ones who need more support than family can provide within their home. We need to find a way to lessen a family’s burden and not add to it with inconsistent help.

Local control and limited government

I believe that most decisions should be made at the city level. State and local authority should be limited and narrowly defined. I also believe land that is located within a specific state should be managed by that state and not the federal government. Citizens who live in an area are the best ones to manage that land.

Why am I running?

I have two agendas: 1) to support and improve public education in Utah. 2) Fight for what is important to you. I have many ideas that I think are important BUT as your representative, I will focus on what you are concerned about.
